Artificial Turf is a growing business
A long-established Linlithgow business, Sports Turf Services, is set to grow and create more jobs, through their retail arm, The Turf Shop at www.theturfshop.co.uk
The business has been approved as a supplier and installer of - Tiger Turf - an artificial grass.
West Lothian Council's Executive Councillor for Development and Transport visited the company to congratulate them on their recent success. Councillor Day said: "It is great to visit a local firm developing new opportunities and expanding. It is also good news that the Business Gateway has been able to provide the support for this growing business."
Peter Campbell, Managing Director of Sports Turf Services, said: "We look forward to providing maintenance-free lawns to West Lothian that will stand up to the ever changing Scottish weather conditions."
Tiger Turf is the UK's leading manufacturer of artificial grass. It has the look and feel of natural grass - but without any of the maintenance time and costs - and is animal friendly. Sports Turf Services will sell Tiger Turf into a range of markets including education (schools, colleges, universities and nurseries); domestic gardens and play areas; and restaurants and pubs.
Sports Turf Services employs six staff in Linlithgow and the business is owned by MD, Peter Campbell. The business is a specialist turf contractor for bowling greens, golf courses and football pitches. Their customers are across Scotland and the north of England. This core business will be augmented by expansion into artificial turf for the domestic market.
The Business Gateway assisted Sports Turf Service to find funding for its expansion. For information and advice on growing your business call 01506 777400, text Biz to 60777 or email bgateway@westlothian.gov.uk |

The Future's Bright for Sports Turf Services
Sports Turf Services started up in March 1972 by Michael Eddington with a total capital of £250. From a rented base at Kinleith Mill, in Currie, both the sales and contracting structure progressed rapidly until in 1975 the Kinleith base wasn't enough to accommodate this expanding business, prompting a move to a site at Newbridge, Edinburgh, where a 5000ft warehouse and office base were ready in December 1976.
Over the next few years Sports Turf Services continued to grow, and soon had a very comprehensive range of stock representing the leading lawn turf industry suppliers and a site which was fully utilised.
The sales business was soon providing Scotland's sports clubs with a full range of lawn fertilisers, lawn seeds, lawn chemicals etc. while the contracting side claimed a number of attractive projects including renovating the Edinburgh Murrayfield pitch and installing automatic irrigation on Edinburgh's Hillend ski slopes.
The range of services Sports Turf Services offered included full bowling green maintenance, to the design and construction of artificial grass bankings. They also had the distinction of providing irrigation for the championship bowling greens at Balgreen, Edinburgh, which have been used for the Commonwealth Games - this in anyone's book has to be a long way from a rented boiler house and an old sheep trailer!
Sports Turf Services Takeover
Sports Turf Services was purchased on February 1st 2007 by Peter Campbell, who also owns The Turf Shop, which deals with the domestic side of turf installation.
Peter began employment as a greenkeeper, and although had no formal training, he went on to study Business Studies in Edinburgh before spending 22 years working for a leading fine turf contractor and turf supplies company, in Scotland. This training has given Peter the experience to purchase a company that in Peter's opinion, "has the best name in the industry".
Sports Turf Services pride themselves in putting out an advisory team to do the initial analysis, then a follow-up will be arranged by one of the trained greenkeepers, who will carry out the maintenance.
Continuity is vital to ensure the upkeep of bowling greens, but with a team of specialists carrying out the work, Peter has no doubts that his team will ensure the very best of service from start to finish.
